Millstream Search (Feb/99)
Date
10/11 February 1999 (36 hours)
Where
Millstream National Park - at Fortescue River
Scenario
Police and SES were on site to search for a person in a 4WD that
had failed an attempted river crossing at a causeway. A witness had seen the vehicle tip
into the water and sink. Failure to locate the person meant that Police divers were called
in to search the river near where the car had sunk. A body was eventually recovered.
Numbers
16 people (mainly Police)
Challenges
Catering had to get to the site in heavy and wet conditions,
leaving Karratha at midnight. Personnel were to be serviced until the search was
concluded. Rough and very wet conditions meant a lot more had to be done on an ad hoc
basis. Eight hours to get back to Karratha because of wet conditions and waiting at
various causeways for water to recede. At second causeway a full meal was organised for
all the people present out of the back of a 4WD.
Highlights!
Great teamwork under difficult conditions where thinking on the
run had to occur.!
