1999 Rio Tinto National Youth Science Forum

The Rio Tinto National Youth Science Forum provides a unique experience for Year 11 high school students who have demonstrated an outstanding interest in science and technology.

For two weeks during the summer vacation, successful awardees come together in a stimulating environment enriched by the input of acknowledged experts in science and technology and encouraged by the opportunities to identify possible career pathways for their own development.

The Forum is based in Canberra where students reside at tertiary institutions and have access to university facilities.

Rotary Clubs are responsible for the identification of students within their communities and for the processing of applications to the District Selection Committee.

Students are responsible for finding the current location fee which covers accommodation, meals, local travel, T-shirt and travel bag. Sponsoring Rotary Clubs may choose to either subsidise or pay in full the students component.

AIM

RYPEN aims to pass on a set of ideas, problems and experiences to year 10 students to allow them to develop socially, academically and culturally. It allows them to develop skills to judge what's right and to give them confidence and deal with issues as they arise.

ACTIVITIES

the activities of RYPEN include Discussion Sessions , Guest Speakers and Group Tasks. The topics dealt with are wide and varied and include Communications and Relationships. Goal Setting and Building Self Esteem. RYPEN is also a social occasion and the Seminar usually includes a special dinner and dance or disco.

RYPEN is a "participation" seminar and those that attend will be asked to help out by thanking guest speakers, giving talks themselves, reporting on group activities or by helping at the camp during meal times, etc. Most of the time, participants will be involved in learning sessions and undertaking various tasks in small groups. This will include discussing and solving problems relevant to their age group.

COORDINATION

RYPEN is run as a weekend seminar and is supervised by the District Rotary Committee. Rotarians within the Rotary District act as seminar coordinators and 'live-in' with the students to provide information and assistance, Rotarians of both sexes and their partners act as counsellors and become "Mum and Dad" for the weekend.

PROGRAM

RYPEN includes the following: Goal Setting, Problem Solving, Decision Making, Self Esteem, Skills Presentation, Awards Meeting Procedure and Chairmanship, Speaking and Presentation Skills, Group Awareness, Debating, Guest Speakers, Disco and Video Concert. The training team will be lead by Chris Maxwell. Chris is a professional motivational speaker and educator. He will be assisted by a group of experienced counsellors and helpers (male and female) un der the guidance of the   Rotary District Committee.

By the end of the weekend, those that have attended will be prepared to form their own opinions and views on a number of issues. They will also have developed the skills that will help them cope with a range of situations they will face as they grow older.
