Red Dog was a Kelpie/Cattle Dog cross born in Paraburdoo in 1971. He became a real character throughout the Pilbara during the next 9 years. He was known to have travelled to Roebourne, Point Samson, Port Hedland, Broome, Tom Price and Perth. His amazing Doghoming instinct saw him always returning to Karratha or Dampier. A statue of Red Dog can be found at the entrance to the town of Dampier. Red Dog’s life history is recorded in the book Red Dog - The Pilbara Wanderer by Beverley Duckett. This book is available from the Karratha Tourist Bureau (08 9144 4600) or the Karratha Library (08 9159 6852) for about $5.00.
