ASHBURTON SEAT UP FOR GRABS
Residents and ratepayers of the Shire of Ashburton are
encouraged to nominate for one vacancy on the Council.
An Extraordinary Election will be held on Saturday, 17 July 1999
to elect one Councillor to the Ashburton Ward.
The Ashburton Ward takes in all that land in the western portion
of the Shire, comprising predominantly pastoral stations.
Election Returning Officer, Mr David Carey said that the
Extraordinary Election will be conducted as a Voting-in-Person Election and nominations
for the vacancy will open on Thursday, 3 June 1999 and close on Thursday, 17 June 1999.
"To nominate as a candidate a person must be at least 18
years of age, be an elector of the district, not disqualified from being a member of the
council and are eligible for the office," said Mr Carey.
A person does not have to actually live in the Ashburton Ward,
as long as they are on the electoral roll within the Shire of Ashburton, however if they
are not on the roll for the Ashburton Ward, then they cannot vote."
A person nominating for the Council must complete a nomination
form, which is available for the Shire Offices or the Electoral Commission, and must be
accompanied by a single A4 page profile of the candidate, containing not more than 150
words of information, together with a nomination deposit of $80.
The term of office will expire in May 2003.
