SHIRE TO ACKNOWLEDGE CONTRIBUTION OF CITIZENS The Shire of Ashburton has adopted a policy designed to recognise the contributions that past and present citizens have made to the community. At its May meeting the Council acknowledged that there are many people in the community, past or present who have made a positive contribution to their community and that these people should be recognised in an appropriate manner. Council considered that the criteria for determining whether to recognise a person would include the period of time as a resident of the Shire of Ashburton or whether that person was considered a pioneer of the district. The contribution to a community group or community as a whole would also be considered in addition to whether that person has held a position of Shire President, Deputy President or Councillor for a period of two terms. Sitting Councillors are not eligible for consideration. Shire Chief Executive Officer, Mr David Carey said that to be nominated for recognition a person must be nominated by a community group or a member of the community or the Council. "There are many people in the community who have made a positive contribution to the shire, whether they be pastoralists, aboriginal people, those in the mining industry, sporting and community groups, former Councillors and local businessmen," said Mr Carey "The Shire wants to appropriately acknowledge these people and thank them for that contribution." Upon being recognised by the Council, a person will have a photo of themselves displayed in the public library of the town in which they live, or nearest town to where they live and a suitable inscription shall be located with the photo indicating the persons name, and the reason for such recognition.
Awards for Citizen of the Year and Sports Star of the Year will remain separate Awards for the purpose of the policy and will fall under different criteria. The Council will also actively support the nomination of people for National Honours such as the Order of Australia as it would like to see more people from the Shire recognised in this matter.
