SHIRE, ROBE RELATIONS TO BE STRENGTHENED
The Shire of Ashburton is seeking to enter into discussions with Robe River Iron Associates to develop a consistent approach to dealing with third parties on issues to do with the status of Pannawonica. In the past there has been some uncertainty in relation to Pannawonica as to whether it is a closed or open town. This uncertainty has lead Council to exercise caution when advising tourists and other third parties of the status of the town and whether they could enter and stay within it. At the April Meeting, Council considered a proposed policy presented by Pannawonica Ward member Councillor Terry Nichols outlining the Councils role and responsibilities within the town and the relationship with Robe River Iron Associates in carrying out the respective roles and responsibilities of the Council and the Company. Council deferred consideration of this matter to its May meeting to allow time to canvas the views of the company about it. Shire Chief Executive Officer, Mr David Carey said that in order to achieve the objectives sought by Councillor Nichols Council's staff should work with representatives of the Company to develop a common understanding of the Companys and the communities desires for the town. At its May meeting Council agreed to develop a written policy, in conjunction with Robe River Iron Associates, detailing the exact duties and responsibilities of the Shire of Ashburton and Robe River on matters that may be jointly agreed to by both parties in relation to Pannawonica. For further information please contact Councils Chief Executive Officer, Mr David Carey on (08) 9189 1029.
