The Shire of Ashburton will sponsor the Ashburton Race Club in its 100^th year of racing, by donating $8,000.00 prize money for the 1998 Onslow Cup.

Shire Chief Executive Officer, Mr David Carey said that the centenary of the Onslow races was a significant event and the Council was please to be a major sponsor it.

"The prize money for the race is sure to attract a large field of horses which will add to the excitement on the race days," said Mr Carey.

The races will be conducted over two weekends – Saturday 15 August 1998 with the Onslow Cup being run on Saturday, 22 August 1998.

The Shire will receive naming rights for the event.
