HMAS Onslow Submarine Update

The HMAS Onslow submarine has arrived safely at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney for permanent display following a decommissioning ceremony on 29 March 1999. The official opening of the submarine will occur on 1 June 1999.

As soon as copies are available (in June or July 1999) the Museum will send the Council relevant photographs of the decommissioning ceremony, Onslow’s arrival at the Museum and also some photographs of Onslow in situ at the Museum, alongside the former RAN destroyer HMAS Vampire.

HMAS Onslow (an Oberon Class submarine) is named after the town of Onslow, in the Shire of Ashburton. It is the third vessel of her name in naval history, the first two both being destroyers carrying proud battle honours. The battle honours for HMAS Onslow are as follows:

Jutland: 1916

Arctic: 1941-43

North Africa: 1942-43

Atlantic: 1942

Barents Sea: 1942

Malt Convoys Biscay: 1944

Normandy: 1944

Norway: 1945
