SHIRE SEEKS PUBLIC COMMENT ON RECREATION STUDY

The Shire of Ashburton has received a report from Jill Powell and Associates, which includes recommendations for the rationalisation of recreation facilities within the Shire.

Shire President, Cr Brian Hayes said that the Council considers the report to be substantial and logical in terms of the facilities it has considered and the issues raised.

"The Report outlines possible policies that could be developed in relation to Council’s facilities and the management of them," said Cr Hayes.

"Council considers that the recommendations of the study reflect the change that is occurring within the towns in the Shire."

The final report will be available for community consultation, which will be carried out by Jill Powell and Associates in early May.

The implications of the report if the recommendations are adopted include the following:

Reduced costs of maintaining reserves that have been identified as excess to requirements;

Costs associated with the removal of non-conforming play equipment to Australian Standards;

Costs of providing play equipment that meets Australian standards and other provisions of associated ancillary facilities such as barbecues, seating and shade;

Possible further investigations into the construction of an Indoor Recreation Centre in Tom Price;

The changing of hours of pool operations and fees and charges;

The review of the management of both pools in the near future; and

Reviewing fees and charges for Council facilities.

For further information please contact Council’s Manager Community Services, Mr Ross Humphries on (08) 9189 1029.
