POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

1. TITLE: Tourist Bureau Manager

2. LEVEL: Local Government Officer’s Award, Level 5

3. DEPARTMENT/SECTION: Corporate Services

4· POSITION OBJECTIVES:

4.1 Objectives of Position:

To manage the Tom Price Tourist Bureau and all aspects of retail, information and booking/referral services provided.

To maintain a local, regional and national tourism perspective.

4.2 Within Section:

To promote an increase in visitation and length of stay of visitors to Tom Price and environs.

To promote an increase in visitation and length of stay of visitors to the Pilbara region.

4.3 Within Organisation:

To liaise effectively/efficiently regarding operation of Bureau to Shire.

5. REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:

5.1 Skills:

Developed interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal);
Developed public relations skills;
Developed time management skills;
Developed numeracy skills;
Developed keyboard skills.

5.2 Knowledge:

Developing local knowledge;
Developing understanding of tourism industry;
Developing knowledge of marketing strategies;
Basic understanding of Council functions.

5.3 Experience:

Two years experience in Tourism Industry or two years experience in service position requiring a high level of contact with the public and demonstrated initiative.

5.4 Qualifications and/or Training:

Relevant tertiary qualification (eg Tourism Diploma/Degree focusing on Tourism Management).

6. KEY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administration:

Manage the bureau on a day to day basis;
Attend to all correspondence on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer;
Prepare monthly management reports for Council.

Finance & Budgeting:

Prepare of the Tourist Bureau's operational budgets and work within budget constraints;
Responsible for the financial operations of the Centre and its cost effectiveness;
Prepare submissions to WA Tourist Commission for annual funding;
Undertake monthly stocktake.

Sales & Promotions:

Promote the activities and benefits of the Bureau, including advertising programs;
Responsible for and co-ordinates all retail operations including general inquiries and sale of commission based accommodation and tour reservations (not limited to local or regional tours and accommodation);
Issues press releases and news-letters;
Maintain stocks;
Promote/assist in festivals/special events which directly benefit Tom Price.

Staff:

Recruits casual staff as required and within budget limitations;
Develop and implement staff training programs;
Ensure the Centre maintains a professional standard.

Industry Liaison:

Liaise with the operators of all segments of the tourism and hospitality industry;
Liaise with relevant tourist bodies and the Shire of Ashburton on matters relating to tourism;
Maintain an up to date knowledge of all tourist facilities in the region by regular visits;
Attend promotional and training activities in the region and elsewhere as directed by the Committee;
Meet with PTA/other Bureau Managers on a quarterly basis.

General:

Attend to duties outside normal office hours;
Assist with development of new and existing tourism products in Tom Price;
Liaise with other tourist centres in the Shire of Ashburton;
Any other duties consistent with the level of this position and principles of broadbanding.
