The Council recognizes that it has a responsibility to facilitate and
encourage the economic development of the Shire of Ashburton and its major
townships of Tom Price, Paraburdoo, Onslow and Pannawonica.
The Council's role in economic development includes:
 | facilitating the establishment of new and expanded businesses in
the towns; |
 | liaising with other levels of government and regional bodies on
economic development issues; |
 | seeking out opportunities for additional infrastructure development
which will support business and commercial activity within the Shire,
including the development of land for that purpose; |
 | encouraging and facilitating expanded tourism throughout the Shire;
and |
 | representing community views with government and in other forums
about transport issues, roads development and other infrastructure, such as
power supply, water supply etc. which are vital to the sustained economic
development of the business and commercial sectors within the Shire. |
To assist in achieving these objectives, which are clearly identified
in the Council's Strategic Plan, the Council:
 | maintains a representative on the Pilbara Development Commission |
 | is constantly seeking Government support and funding for economic
development initiatives throughout the Shire. |
 | contributes both financially and in an advisory capacity to tourism
development throughout the Shire. |
 | is actively pursuing the progression of the normalisation of the
mining towns of Tom Price and Paraburdoo to reduce dependence upon Hamersley
Iron. |
In addition the Council has recently established a voluntary regional
organization of Councils, namely the Shires of Roebourne, East Pilbara and the
Town of Port Headland, to promote the economic and social development of the
region.
The Council's Chief Executive Officer is directly responsible for
economic development matters throughout the Shire, which emphasises the
importance the Council places upon economic development issues.
Any matters residents and the business community may wish to discuss
with respect to enhancing economic
prosperity throughout the Shire district can be directed to the Chief Executive
Officer at the Council's Tom Price Office.
